For the top photo I have three guesses. The first is an airplane not normally parked at that gate (either airline or airplane size) I'm not enough of an airport nerd to know. Second is the fact there are two planes on the runway. Either the 747 was really fast on the line-up and wait, or the tower had the smaller plane turn onto the runway in front of the Heavy to avoid turbulence on the climb out. The last guess is that the cargo ramp looks unusually full.
For the second photo, it looks like the Hawaiian has a winglet on the right side, but not the left side of the aircraft.
OK here is my take on what is odd. In the first picture it looks like united tried to park a wide body, judging by the wing tip, in one of the alley gates. Looks like they angled it in to clear the alley. In the second shot, it looks like Hawaiian is missing a wingtip fence.
A Virgin America 320 on the south side. Hawaiian 332's on the south side of LAX. Both carriers usually operate out of the north side of LAX and take off from runway 24L, instead of runway 25R. This is a wonderful web site!
In the first photo there are two aircraft on the same RWY? Runway incursion? In the second photo, a pushcart on the taxiway? I listen to LAX atc all the time. What frequency are you on usually? North complex or south? Would love to listen when you're on!
Captain Vector, I've enjoyed your blog for the duration of its existence. As a long tenured, fellow LAX employee, I say "Well done, sir!" In photo #1, I'm guessing its the appearance of the UA 753 (757-300) - not a common visitor to LAX these days. In photo #2, the HA A332 (A330-200) is missing a winglet. Not a big deal - when necessary, wingletted aircraft are often dispatched sans a winglet.
Longer than I meant to - for some reason I didn't see any of the comments for this post until a day or two after you posted yours - I thought nobody was interested!

ReplyDeleteIt appears that the winglet is missing on the HA A332, I'm sure an optical illusion. Looks like the 747 is rolling as the RJ is still on the runway.

ReplyDeleteThe A330 is missing it’s port side wingtip after colliding with an A321.
ReplyDeleteDo I see Amazon Prime Air in the first and a missing winglet in the second?

On second viewing of that first pix, UA typically doesn't park B777s that deep into the C-6 alleyway. That aircraft is parked at Gate 72.
ReplyDeleteHow long are you going to keep us in suspense?
