Hey, that Delta 777 gave me an idea--how about a blog entry on 'Planes of Delta'? Didn't they just add the ex-Air Tran 717s to the SF-LA route? Besides the 777 and 717, what else does Delta have at LAX? I've seen their 747s at JFK, but can't remember then at LAX.
Actually, the Delta service between LAX and SFO is almost completely handled by Compass E-170s. SkyWest is their other regional partner here; they operate CRJ7s and CRJ9s in Delta paint. It's been years since I've seen a B717 at LAX; we had AirTran B717s for a little while before they got their B737s. You're right, Southwest sold or leased the AirTran B717s to Delta; I saw one last month in Houston. It's a funny thing that Boeing ceased production of that airplane because they couldn't find any buyers, but now it's a hot commodity. The B757 was that way too for quite a while; only within the last year or two has that type started to find its way to the desert. At LAX, Delta operates B737-800s and -900s, B757-200s and -300s; B767-300s, and B777-200s. We have had Delta (nee Northwest) A319s, A320s, and A330s, but I haven't noticed any of those types here lately in Delta colors. Same for the B747s, which also came from Northwest. Delta still has a big fleet of MD88s and MD90s, but we don't see them here either.
Thanks Captain for reviving the blog with the nice photos there. Did the FAA change the final approach frequency for planes that are from the East and South East..? I now hear nothing on 124.900. 132.375 is the new frequency..?
Recently I passed by John Wayne in Orange County and the flights were departing "opposite" of the normal direction. They were headed east lifting off over the 405 fwy. I would assume inbound was coming in from the west over the ocean.
It reminded me of a flight I took in December where we took off from LAX headed east over Inglewood, rather than the "normal" west bound departure.
I would assume weather, as well as a multitude of other factors play a part in this decision.
Can you speak on those decisions? Also, I am very curious about the planning that goes into suddenly stopping all the inbound flights from lining up headed west, and now lining them up heading east.
